It got me thinking while reading the thread about the sexism in the commercials...
If they asked you what kind of commercials would appeal to women players, what would you want advertised and what presentation should they give? For example: Would you like it to be very similar to the men's commercials? Sexy men selling alcoholic beverages? Or would you like it to be selling the poker itself, nice places to play with real women portrayed having fun and relaxation? What else? |

I feel that the commercials wouldn't be any better if they sexualized men. They would still be extremely sexist, just on the opposite end of the spectrum. I would rather they just advertise Poker.

To be honest, even if they did go with sexist commercials sexualizing men, I wouldn't get much out of it anyway. I've never cared for naked or half-naked men dancing, or whatever else they could be doing on TV. It just doesn't appeal to me the way that it seems women doing it does for men.

Women are not as visually titalated as men are. So I'm not surprised that few women would want the female-version of sex selling anything.
Poker has sponsors. Commercials come up during poker games trying to sell products that will appeal to poker players and not all of them have to do with the game. How would they sell alcoholic beverages to women poker players? What else is sold? Sports equipment? What sports for women? Cologne. Would perfume commercials fit? Just curious. Because poker is not going to sell just poker. |

You pose an interesting question QueenofHearts. I think it's possible for them to have alcohol ads without focusing on women's sexuality. I'm by no means a prude, but I just feel that using women's bodies to sell something completely unrelated - alcohol - is not exactly healthy. It's not necessarily the products that I'm concerned with, just the way that they are shown. I guess it depends on each case.

I would agree that it's not particularly the product being advertised. I wouldn't mind alcohol commercials, I think something just a bit less sexist is in order. I am not a prude by any means, I just think that in an advertising situation, it's inappropriate.

Yes, I see the point. For things like alcohol, in the UK they started to push the young and modern scene. There were a range of alcopops, and they aimed for the young twenties-and it wasn't all bare flesh.
Sports-well netball isn't going to do it! But I can see potentially an aggresive hockey match working. |

Advertising sports could be a bit harder, but I think it could be done. Showing something aggressive and compelling is the way to go. You don't have to show women in their underwear every time you want to promote a football game, just show some intense moments from past games.
