At one time, it would have been considered crazy for a woman to try to break into the ranks of the male-dominated professional poker playing ranks. Poker, or so the popular thinking went, was a man's game, and no woman could possibly compete. However, top players such as Kathy Liebert, Annie Duke, and Jennifer Harman proved these stereotypes wrong when they started playing, and winning, some of the biggest poker tournaments out there.
There are many ways that women can improve their poker skills, and while not all women have the skill necessary to compete at the highest levels, there is no reason why they cannot succeed and enjoy their own particular favorite types of poker. Here are a few simple tips that can help you make the best of your poker games, both online and in brick and mortar games.
Use what you get - When you approach a table filled with male players, you will often run up against derision. Some men view women at a poker table as "little ladies" that have to be treated like lesser players, which can be used to your full advantage. Some female players have been known to act "dumb" on purpose to learn information from other players and while this may violate poker etiquette, it is no worse than the outright hostility some female players have faced when joining poker games. Therefore, if you are sitting at a table with some real macho men, why not try asking them what they have in their hands. It may just work and net you a big pot.
Use what you got - Male players are also often dazzled by women sitting at their table. If you can use your looks and physical attributes to get someone off balance (and you do not mind doing so) go ahead and do it.
Use their insecurity - Many top female players have noted that they often run into male players who feel that their manhood is threatened by female players, which is why it is good to play online poker as a female, even though you can play as a male. A man who feels threatened may raise or call when he really does not have the cards just so he is get "shown up" by a woman. Therefore, if you are up against a man (or men) like this, try playing an aggressive style – it may just get him to take more chances on bad hands, increasing your winnings.
Pick a limit you can handle - If you have $2,000 to gamble with, you should not play in a high limit game. Remember, you could be finished in a very short time instead of enjoying a productive day of playing. Experts reckon that you should have 50 times the table limit or more before you sit down to play.
Learn to fold - Good poker players, male or female, fold at least 90% of the time because they know that what they have been dealt will not let them win. Do not stay in a hand because you think you will look weak by folding since the player who tries to appear strong with weak cards often ends up busted.
Practice and study - All of the best players agree that playing low limit games is the best way to build your skills. You should also read everything about poker you can get your hands on since you never know when a tip you read will help you win a hand.
